The “Person” in the Hoodie

Filed under: Hanging with the Ink Peppers — Stacia @ 4:51 pm

At Cortland High today, I realized that even when looking at the exact same thing, people can still see it differently. Ms. Triplett began by going over some “business” things like due dates for the Peppers’ writing camp. Then, she put a drawing up on the overhead that one of her students had done. It was of a person wearing a hoodie over a nice shirt and necktie. We could explore anything that this picture inspired us to write about. What I didn’t realize until Alexis and Tori read their pieces was that the person also had a lip and nose piercing. I had totally overlooked those details! When I looked at it, I saw a boy hiding beneath his hood, and that is what I wrote about (as most of you know because I read mine in front of everyone).  Some people thought that the drawing portrayed a girl. It was AMAZING how differently everyone interpreted the picture!

Ms Triplett also asked us about our contribution to their publication. She said that we can submit something that we have been working on. Theresa mentioned our multi-genre pieces and volunteered to organize a multi-genre piece about college that we could all collaborate on.  Thanks for taking that on Theresa! Ms. Triplett said we can get it to her when we are done but the sooner the better! We should start to brainstorm ideas here so that we don’t repeat too many college life experiences. I had fun there today!

  1. I loved this activity as well. It was so interesting what each person noticed first. For example, Amanda said that she didn’t even notice the tie until people started reading their stories. I enjoyed all of the stories that were shared, and hope to expand on it. It was also nice being with the Peppers after such a long period of time!
