Interview/Profile Reflections

Filed under: Interviews — Douglas @ 5:49 pm

Hey all,

I completed my follow up interview with sports writer Bud Poliquin a few days ago, and just finished writing up my full profile on him. I started thinking about the whole experience and really feel that the entire assignment was so worthwhile and wonderful. Poliquin was such an interesting guy to sit down and talk to and I feel that I’ve learned so much from him. He actually sent me a package today which incuded a book of his that was published 12 years ago which includes 100 of his columns. Sorry for rambling. I just called him up to thank him for all of his time and that got me thinking. Hopefully all of you have had equally wonderful experiences.

Doug.

Interview Questions

Filed under: Interviews — krismark @ 4:21 pm

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that in the Post Standard, a section is dedicated to an interview with Judy Blum about her book “Blubber.”  Besides the fact that I enjoy Judy Blume’s writing, a variety of questions were asked.  I am not sure how many of you can get the section since it’s from Sunday’s paper, but I thought maybe the questions could help guide whoever has yet to interview someone.  I am sure you can access it online.

See you tomorrow!

Vicki Boynton

Filed under: Interviews — Theresa @ 9:18 am

I am never been so blown away talking to a person before in my life! I had my interview with Vicki Boynton the other day and it was amazing. She was so welcoming and inviting. When I first got to her office, she just began to talk. I could tell she was excited for me to be writing a piece about her and that her work really interested me. At the beginning, I didn’t even have to ask any questions, she just talked and gave me some great ideas to work with and intertwine into my paper. She went right to her computer and went to her writing folder and gave me pieces she was working on, why, with who, and what made her want to do it. Sitting there listening to her was such a great experience.

Before entering her office, I read a bunch of her poems and fell in love. They are personal yet at the same time made up a bit, which is fascinating. When she was explaining some of her poetry and pieces with me, she got very excited! When I was there, time just flew by and we had gone too long that one of her mentees who had an appointment with her was waiting patiently outside her door. I felt a little bad for taking up so much of her time but it was so insightful. Having her talk about her life and how she got to where she is now was remarkable.

When I sat down to write my paper, I didn’t know exactly how to start my paper. After sitting at my computer for about twenty minutes my fingers began typing and I couldn’t stop. Three hours later, I was still typing. She is an interesting person and I haven’t quite finished my piece yet because there are a few things I still want to add in but I began to touch the surface of the life of a writer, teacher, poet, and friend.

My interview!

Filed under: Interviews — Douglas @ 1:06 pm

I finally got to sit down with Syracuse Post Standard sports writer Bud Poliquin on Friday.  I had such an amazing time and it was a pleasure to sit down with him for about an hour at his house just outside of Syracuse.  Two of the high points are as follows.

He talked about breaking into the business.  Bud just graduated from UConn and he had no idea where to go or what to do.  He wrote a letter to one of his favorite writers and this writer gave him the following advice.  The writer told him to subscribe to the newspapers with the best sports writers and to read them daily and notice how they write and how they succeed.  The writer wanted Bud to study the craft of other writers and told him that eventually his own unique style would emerge.

Another high point was listening to Bud talk about the writing advice he got from a fellow columnist Tom Cushman.  Cushman told him that a column is like a person.  Each person is different and has a distinct and unique personality.  That is how Bud views his writing.  Every piece he sets out to write takes on a different personality and hence accomplishes something different.

I met Tamora Pierce!

Filed under: Interviews — krismark @ 9:44 am

I had a wonderful time yesterday, interviewing Tamora Pierce for an hour in Barnes and Noble.  I will discuss the interview more in class today because if I were to write everything we talked about, I would be here all day.  She was so inspirational, funny, insightful, and gave me some great advice on writing and how to get students writing in the classroom.  I was so lucky to get to interview her! I was on cloud 9 when I left Syracuse yesterday.

Interview

Filed under: Interviews — Theresa @ 8:52 pm

I am very interested in poetry, I love reading it, writing it, and everything about it. Dr. Stearns recommend that I email Vicki Boyton for my interview and I am really excited about it. I really enjoyed when she came to class and did a dramatic reading of her poetry. She has an interesting story behind her writing so I hope that she emails me back soon and lets me know if she would be intersted in talking with me.

My interview!!!!!

Filed under: Interviews — khardter @ 7:28 pm

I am SO excited!!! I finally got myself an interview with a writer who lives in Ithaca. She is a sister of one of my professors, and she seems awesome. Her website is www.ellenhartman.com.

Mrs. Hartman does the following types of writing:

“technical documentation both print and online for software and hardware
web sites–basic info about a program or organization
web content–scientific articles about environmental risk factors for breast cancer
personal essays on parenting
course materials for a distance education high school
brochures (some, not many–I don’t like them)
press releases (just a couple)
romance novels (my favorite…)
newsletter content (limited)”

Just from looking at her website, I can tell that she is hilarious. I am really looking forward to interviewing her!

I hope everyone is having similar success!

Metro Voices

Filed under: Interviews — Stacia @ 8:31 pm

I am so excited because I have found the writer that I want to interview! She is Maureen Sieh and she writes the Metro Voices section of the Post Standard.  She is from Liberia, West Africa where she wrote for a paper that “was banned and burned several times for exposing corruption and abuses.” How interesting! Now, she writes about ethnic communities, diversity, immigration and urban issues including covering crime and safety, city neighborhoods and everything else in between.  I read some of her articles and love the way she seems to be so involved in the community. I am waiting for her response, but hopefully she will be willing to let me interview her!!
