This morning, I attended the Scholar’s Day event for the winners of the SUNY Cortland Writing Contest. Each of the six winners (the seventh could not make it) read their winning piece or at least a portion of it. I was thoroughly impressed! All of the winners were clearly deserving of their honor. I especially like “The Sport’s Chick” blog. It can be found here: http://blog.cortland.edu/dmlykos It was so fun and creative! She continues adding to this blog even though her class assignment with it is completed.
I also enjoyed Allison’s piece on the freedom of free verse. She mentioned this website: http://www.loc.gov/poetry/180/ It has 180 poems (!) selected with High School students in mind. This way they have a poem for everyday of the school year. The site highly sugests reading these poems aloud. As I experienced at Taylor Mali last night, poems are so meaningful when read and shared with a group. This website is a great resource for us as future teachers!
